Portrait of Pola Negri / Portret Poli Negri
New York, 1923

The National Museum in Warsaw, Poland

Pola Negri was a brilliant Polish star of silent movies and the first European to launch a successful career in Hollywood. She was born in 1897 in Lipno in Poland. In 1914 she debuted in "Slave of Desires" quickly becoming the most popular actress in Warsaw. In 1917 she left for Berlin, which at that time was the heart of European cinema. In Germany she played in twenty three films and was soon noticed by the greatest producers of American cinema. In January 1923 Pola Nagri arrived in New York. The most important stage of her life had just begun. Her greatest success was a role in "Forbidden Paradise" by renowned director Ernst Lubitsch. In the United States she not only became a silent movie star but also an object of worship. Charlie Chaplin and the greatest screen heart-throb of the silent cinema Rudolf Valentino could not resist her charm. She played in sixty three films - for the last time in 1964. She died in San Antonio in 1987 at the age of ninety.
